Forest Bathing
What is forest bathing?
Forest bathing (or shinrin-yoku) is a mindful, embodied, and nature-connecting practice that developed in Japan in the 1980’s and has spread around the world. The name refers to bathing ourselves in the atmosphere of the forest through slowing down and engaging with all our senses. Research shows many psychological and physiological benefits of forest bathing. A guided experience can support emotional wellbeing, reduce stress, regulate blood pressure, boost immunity, enhance focus and creativity, and aid with mood and depression.
Forest bathing invites us to connect with our hearts to renew and clarify our relationships with ourselves, other humans, and the natural world. It is kindred to other nature-based cultural practices, including many Indigenous practices.
At its core, forest bathing is about growing our sense of being alive in relationship with kin who are also vibrantly alive.
